CompTIA's Cybersecurity Analyst (CySA+) Certification

In February 2017, CompTIA released its latest certification course and exam: CompTIA Cybersecurity Analyst (CySA+). This certification is an international vendor-neutral cybersecurity certification that applies behavioral analytics to improve the overall state of IT. This latest certification from CompTIA follows their record of having exams that challenge and validate skills that combat cybersecurity threats.

As attackers have learned to evade traditional solutions like firewalls, an analytics-based approach within the IT security industry is increasingly important for most organizations. The behavioral analytics skills covered by CySA+ recognizes and helps users combat advanced persistent threats (APTs) and other malware risks a system might face. This results are enhanced visibility across the board.

CompTIA CySA+ is for IT professionals looking to gain the following security analyst skills:

  • Configure and use threat detection tools
  • Perform data analysis
  • Interpret the results to identify vulnerabilities, threats and risks to an organization.

There are no definitive prerequisites for CySA+ certification, however there are some ways to ensure that success is reached. CySA+ is designed to follow the CompTIA Security+ certification exam, or equivalent experience, and has a very hands-on focus. Network+, Security+ or equivalent knowledge is recommended, as well as a minimum of 3 to 4 years of hands on information security or related experience. Building on CySA+, IT professionals can purse CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner (CASP) to prove their skill set of the hands-on cybersecurity knowledge required at the 5 to 10 year experience level.

This course is designed for cybersecurity personnel who perform job functions related to protecting information systems by ensuring their availability, integrity, authentication, confidentiality, and non-repudiation. The course focuses on the knowledge, ability and skills necessary to provide those obtaining it to be ready for the defense of their information systems in a cybersecurity context. This includes protection, detection, analysis, investigation and response processes.

IT security staff are in high demand. Those who have the skill and training to analyze, monitor and protect cybersecurity resources are sought after to help in industries of all kinds. Security positions in IT have been accredited by many organizations. CySA+ has received the ISO/ANSI 17024 credit and is awaiting approval for U.S Department of Defense (DoD) requirements. Security analyst careers have ranked seventh on U.S. New’s list of 100 Best Technology Jobs for 2017. CySA+ works to further security knowledge and skills for those familiar with CompTIA certifications and those looking to get started in cybersecurity.  In addition, the course certifies that all members of an IT team – from help desk staff to Chief Information Officer – understands their role in these security processes.
